Taught Masters

The Northern Centre offers two masters programmes in history of medicine. The programmes can be studied full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months). Both programmes are open to medical students as an intercalated option.

Durham University's Department of Philosophy, Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease, and School of Medicine and Health offer a Taught Masters Programme (MA) in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine (HPSM).

This one-year (two years part-time) programme will provide students with a deeper understanding of historical, cultural and philosophical issues in science and medicine from Antiquity up to the present day. Using socio-cultural models to analytical approaches its primary aim is to show how the intellectual vibrancy of the humanities is relevant to a deeper understanding of past and present medical and scientific issues. The Department of Archaeology at Durham offers a MSc programme in Palaeopathology. This MSc takes a holistic view of disease and prepares students for undertaking significant research projects in this subject. Newcastle University runs a MA programme in History of Medicine that provides specialized postgraduate training in this rapidly growing interdisciplinary field. This MA programme is of special interest in that it offers comprehensive coverage of the whole history of medicine from classical antiquity to the twenty-first century. It provides the necessary research training that will either link into further PhD study or act as a stand alone MA. Each year, the Northern Centre awards a number of Masters Studentships in the History of Medicine. These studentships will be advertised on our webpage as well as through mailing lists.

Candidates who have successfully completed one of the programmes will be eligible to take part in the annual Wellcome Trust PhD studentship competition.
