Dr. Sarah Francis was a temporary lecturer at Newcastle University in 2010-11.  Her research interests include Aristotle, Greek philosophy and ancient medicine and the connections between medicine and philosophy.

Aristotelianism and the Development of Medical Science in Antiquity

Dr. Francis worked as a Research Associate to Philip van der Eijk on the Wellcome funded project Aristotelianism and the Development of Medical Science in Antiquity.  Sarah's research focused on the interaction between Aristotle’s corpus and medical works, especially with regards to the role of medicine in ethical training and the character of the physician.

The project aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding and assessment of the role of Aristotelianism in the development of medicine in antiquity, concentrating on the following areas:

  • the reception, transformation and further development of medical knowledge in the works of Aristotle and the early Peripatetic school
  • the reception of Aristotelian science and philosophy of science in Hellenistic and Galenic medicine
  • the impact of developments in medicine after Aristotle (especially in Alexandrian medicine and in Galen) on later Aristotelian thought and on the interpretation of Aristotle's biological, physiological and psychological writings in late antiquity.
